Trailer analysis

Prince of Persia 2008. (2:02)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=7q449i3ZA3Y

Sound.
The sound is the most important aspect of this trailer because it moulds the entire trailer together. The primary sound is the trailer is “Saeglopur by Sigur Ros” It must have been a risk Ubisoft were prepared to take, but the song captured the beauty of the games art style.

During the trailer, we were shown gameplay footage, at the start it opened with a step by step coloring of the protagonist eye.
After the opening sequence everything shown is in game footage of the main two characters, the environment is displayed and shown how we can interact with it. Also footage was shown of the fights you encounter in the game.

This trailer shows that we don't have to include in game sounds or voice overs to sell our game. With the beautiful art style in Prince of Persia and the harmonious music from Sigur Ros the trailer moulds perfectly together.

Red Dead Redemption “My Name is John Marston” (2:02)

This trailer is excellent, it captures everything in the game excellently.
The trailer consists of in game footage, due to Rockstar wanting to show how great the visuals are in the game.
The trailer begins with the main character John Marston narrating about the world the game takes place in.
The games environments are truly in display in this trailer which shows you what the game is really about.
The trailer introduces you to plenty of characters within the game, showing you how great and vast the cast is.
Along with voiceovers the primary sound is the music that Red Dead is famous for, the brilliant score melds in excellently with the voice others and environments within this trailer.

Gears of War “Mad World” (1:01)

This is a superb trailer.
The trailer consists of the song Mad World by Gary Jules, this song is played superbly over the dark murky environment the trailer shows.
The trailer provides in game footage of Gears of War, which brilliantly captures the games essence along with the music.
The trailer provides you with the information you need to know, it’s very bleak, Sad, Dark Scary, Brutal. From those points the game is sold to me.
The introduction of the character shooting gigantic spider looking creature  really sold the game to me, due to the trailer expressing how bleak the game is and feels like there is no hope to this game.

Halo 3 “Believe” (1:31)

This is a fantastic trailer, it provides you with all of the information for a conflict that is lost.
Although the characters are still, you can tell what has happened, and emotion that the trailer shows.
The music is brilliant, nothing mainstream just a piano playing, this felt emotional due to the battle that looks lost.
There isn't to much to discuss except the inspiring moment when the games protagonist lifts his head up, then ‘Believe’ comes on the screen. That really set the standards of the game, because from this trailer everything looks bleak and lost, but this gives the gamers a proud moment to defeat the alien army to avenge the fallen as the trailer showed.

GTA IV #1 (1:02)

This was the first trailer for GTA 4, there was a bunch of hype surrounding the game so focus was on the trailer to shock the viewers, Rockstar delivered on this.
The soundtrack to this trailer is “Pruit Igoe” and at the beginning of the trailer when the song is at it’s peak the trailer shows you the landscape of liberty city, by looking at various buildings and the LC skyline.
The trailer gives you a quick introduction of the main character Niko, he speaks towards the end of the trailer, which is brilliantly done.
The GTA’s next gen visuals is captured brilliantly in this trailer.

Borderlands “Ain’t No Rest for the Wicked” (2:00)

Borderlands is one of my favourite games, along with it’s cartoon violence and gory humor and this trailer shows off these aspects brilliantly within this trailer.
The narrator ( a in game character) speaks about the area you’re playing in, the games humor is shown right at the beginning.
There are four players to controller in the game and the trailer demonstrates these superbly,  by introducing you to each character and seeing all four in combat.
The gore and humor is shown through this trailer which is the basis of Borderlands.
The music from the trailer “No Rest for the Wicked by Cage the Elephants” captures the game brilliantly to.
The trailer shows plenty of what you can do in the game to, providing you with plenty of reasons to go out and buy this game.

RTS style games often use CGI trailers that try to sell the story of the game as its hard to communicate the tactics and strategy of the game to new audiences. Here's a collection of trailers of strategy based games that include gameplay.

Supreme Commander 2

World in Conflict

Red Alert 3

Age of Empires 2 HD edition

Starcraft 2: Heart of the Swarm

League of Legends

Notes

  • Most of them remove the HUD
  • Use of different camera angles that aren't always available in the actual game
